BSc Geography and Economics (LL71)

A particular benefit of this joint degree is to study the analytical approach of economics alongside political economy, which informs many relevant courses in geography. Geography and Economics and Finance graduates are highly sought after, possessing strong numeracy and literacy skills.
It provides an entry route for both private and public sectors as well as for further academic studies. After core courses in macroeconomics, microeconomics and quantitative analysis in the first year, you can further develop your background in business economics, macroeconomics, microeconomics and quantitative methods in the second and third years. There indeed is a wide array of optional courses allowing you to direct your studies to the areas that interest you most. In the course of your studies, you will also develop a range of transferable skills, e.g., how to work individually or in groups, how to do oral presentations, how to write essays and reports, problem solving, and proficiency in a variety of IT skills.

Course structure

There is a common structure to all joint honours degrees which requires that you take at least nine modules in Economics. In each year, students should normally take all modules listed in the designated pathway, and must normally pass all core modules (indicated by “*”) in order to obtain a joint honours degree with “Economics” in the title.

For information on the required non-Economics modules you must contact the Department of Geography. The required Economics modules are set out below.

In Year 1, students must take the following modules:
  • ECN106 Macroeconomics 1
  • ECN111 Microeconomics 1
  • ECN113 Principles of Economics
  • ECN114 Mathematical Methods in Economics and Business 1

In Year 2, students must take
  • ECN121 Statistical Methods in Economics
  • ECN206 Macroeconomics 2
  • ECN211 Microeconomics 2
  • ECN214 Games and Strategies

Note that students have to file the appropriate Module Level Permission Form for ECN121.

In Year 3, students must take at least six modules at Level 6, including one Economics Level 6 module.
Please note that your choice of options in Years 2 and 3 will be constrained by the units you have taken in previous years. You should check the prerequisites for the Year 2 and Year 3 module units before choosing your modules in previous years (see Section 6).
