Matias pursued undergraduate studies at the Universidad de la Republica (Uruguay) and did the MSc in Economics at the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics. He joined the School of Economics and Finance at Queen Mary in September 2012.

In his first research project he studied the impact of growing up under military dictatorships on the formation of political beliefs and preferences. His second project looks into migration, with an emphasis on how differential performance of immigrants in the receiving country leads to differences in outcomes in the sending country.
