MSc Investment and Finance
This specialist degree for students and professionals provides practical and theoretical training in areas of major financial interest, in particular investment management and corporate finance. Examples of topics covered include: optimal capital structure, mergers and acquisitions, portfolio management, risk management, derivatives and finance microstructure.
We expect graduates from this programme to enter into a career in finance or related areas including financial institutions, financial regulatory bodies, Public sector institutions and International organisations such as International Monetary Fund and World Bank in positions such as investment analyst, financial analyst, trader and portfolio manager.
Unique features of this course include:
- A very high rate of employment of our students within 6 months after their graduation
- Professional exam exemption. Students applying to the Chartered Institute for the Securities and Investment (CISI) Masters in Wealth Management programme are entitled to apply for exemption from the first module - Financial Markets.
- Tuition from visiting 'practitioner' professors who apply theory to real world scenarios (provide link to teaching)
Once completed, this programme will provide you with a specialisation in investment, financing and financial markets. You will gain an all-inclusive knowledge and appreciation of major contemporary issues in financial research and a methodical knowledge of quantitative methods so you will have the skills necessary to undertake quantitative analysis of relevant problems

Teaching
Our faculty members are distinguished research economists who publish in the profession's most influential journals and advise major institutions such as the World Bank and the Bank of England.
A number of the additional modules are often taught by City practitioners, who provide an insider’s view on topics of interest to the financial community.
Teaching staff include: Giles Spungin (Goldman Sachs as Quantity Auditor), Patrick Boyle and Jessie McDougall (Portfolio Managers of a proprietary, quantitatively-driven asset management strategy for Liquid Capital Markets) and Gerry Perez who has been in the financial industry for more than 23 years.
Course structure
You will follow a programme of four modules per semester, followed by a 10,000 word dissertation. There are also pre-sessional modules in mathematics and statistics, providing a good opportunity for students to refresh their knowledge of these areas. Assessment
A written examination is taken in May for each course unit. Some units may also include assessed coursework. You will also produce a 10,000-word dissertation over the summer, which includes both theoretical financial content and applied results.
Entry requirements
You should have at least a good second class honours degree, or equivalent, in economics or a related subject. A good basic knowledge of relevant statistical theory and mathematics is also necessary, and students are expected to attend intensive pre-sessional statistics and mathematics modules in September.
