Graduate Diploma

This is a nine-month course based on a mix of core microeconomics, macroeconomics, statistics and either economics or finance options, depending on the chosen profile. Although it is a standalone course, most students use it as a preparatory course before embarking on an MSc, both at Queen Mary or in other academic institutions. It is designed for applicants who are academically very able but whose background knowledge is not yet at the level required to embark on an MSc programme and perform successfully. Our Graduate Diploma students either have an undergraduate degree in a non-economics subject and require a conversion course, or have an economics degree which did not cover some of the necessary subjects at the level we require. Students achieving the Graduate Diploma with Credit or Distinction in June will gain automatic entrance to the MSc programme of their choice in the following September, simply by presenting the application to the chosen programme.

Students are required to take three compulsory courses and to choose five courses at level 6 from the 'List of Economics Courses at Level 6' in the handbook.

The exact plan of study must be agreed with the student’s academic adviser in September. Students with an interest in financial economics will want to make use of the School’s extensive offerings in this area.

The full list of level 6 courses available to Diploma students isin the handbook . Note that Diploma students cannot register for either ECN325 or ECN326 available to BSc students.

In consultation with an adviser, you will select eight courses from the undergraduate programme in Economics and Finance, attend classes/seminars that follow these lectures, and sit examinations in May. These will normally include undergraduate core courses in microeconomics, macroeconomics, statistics and econometrics. Exceptionally, if you can demonstrate that you have covered the content of a particular course to an acceptable standard, then, in consultation with your adviser, you may substitute alternative courses drawn from the final-year undergraduate programme. The title of the award will depend on the mix of courses chosen, but will normally specify Economics or Economics and Finance.

Assessment

You will sit eight examinations in May and early June. There are three passing grades: Pass, Credit and Distinction.
