PhD Research Environment
We pride ourselves on offering a first class research environment, giving students what they need to concentrate on their research. Details of the research interests of our current research students are available at our research pages.
Each student is assigned a desk with computing facilities in an office with other research students. We have a large number of available specialised software, and a well stocked library.
The School produces a discussion paper series, which provides an opportunity for preliminary research results to be disseminated. Research students are encouraged to submit their results to this series.
We are proud of the thriving research environment in our School. In addition to the regular seminar series with external speakers and the weekly staff seminar, the School also runs two reading groups, where both staff and students present work which is too preliminary for a more formal seminar. This forum is ideal for the exchange of research ideas and allows students to get feedback on their work from members of faculty in a friendly and informal setting. Why not check out our full list of events?
Each year we also run the PhD Conference: this is a doctoral seminar, compulsory for all students, who present to the whole School their research so far. The Conference is well attended by academic staff and it is useful to provide additional feedback to PhD students' research work.
The PhD Programme at the School of Economics and Finance, Queen Mary, University of London is an excellent preparation for careers in a number of fields. Previous generations of students have subsequently followed successful careers in industry, finance, academic research, the civil service, public sector institutions in the UK and international organisations such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, following graduate study within the School. Our courses are designed to appeal to both employers and academic institutions, so that, on completion of a graduate course, you will have the skills and knowledge necessary either to make a successful career in the private or public sector, or alternatively follow an academic career in the UK or abroad.
Additional facilities for Graduate students are available at the Lock-keeper's Graduate Centre for Humanities and Social Sciences: this complements the School's facilities, and is located along the canal on Queen Mary's campus. It offers amongst other things a seminar room , common room and kitchen for staff and postgraduate students, plus three further open plan rooms for postgraduate study. Don't forget that we are the only Economics faculty in central London on a Campus University: our Student Village offers plenty of places to relax as well as study, and you will not find its equal in Central London!
Your supervisor
The School provides you with a primary and secondary supervisor. While facilitating continuity in the case of faculty leave, working closely with two supervisors also provides you with a greater range of research expertise than would be possible through sole supervision. You can expect to form a close working relationship with your supervisors, meeting regularly (not less than fortnightly through the opening stage of the research) throughout your time in the School. This will contribute not only to your imediate research project, but also to your broader career development. If you want to find out about the research interests of our current faculty and their world class research output, please look at our research pages.
