School of Economics and Finance excels in National Student Survey (NSS)
The 2011 National Student Survey has confirmed the School of Economics and Finance as one of the top UK Economics Schools for student experience. 93% of our students have rated the overall quality of their course good or very good, 8% points above the national average for Economics Schools. This result places the School in seventh position among all UK Economics Schools for overall student satisfaction.
Queen Mary now part of the Russell Group
The School is pleased to announce that Queen Mary will be part of the Russell Group from August 2012. The Russell Group is a group of 20, soon to be 24, research-intensive universities in the UK, committed to maintaining the best research, an outstanding teaching and learning experience, and unrivalled links with business and the public sector.
Professor Simon Gaskell, Principal of Queen Mary, said: “We are delighted to accept the invitation to join the Group."
Raphaela Hyee successfully defended her PhD thesis
Congratulations to Raphaela Hyee, who successfully defended her PhD thesis on Intrahousehold Distribution. It deals with the distribution of resources between spouses, and the influence the marriage market has on this distribution.
Raphaela was supervised by Paola Manzini and Giulio Fella. She is now working at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna.

National Student Survey – SEF 2nd overall in London!
The National Students Survey (NSS) is a yearly survey directed at all final year students in all disciplines across all Universities in the UK. The survey includes 22 statements divided in 6 sections: teaching, assessment, support, organisation, personal development and learning resources.
The aim of the survey is to give students the opportunity of expressing their views about their learning experience at University. The NSS results are commonly used in setting league tables published by leading British newspapers.
QM Economics and Finance student Selina Dhesy shares her experience
Selina graduated from the School of Economics and Finance with an BSc in Economics, and shortly after graduation started working in purchasing and supply. She uses methods she learnt in her degree for analysing spend and developing strategy.

Adviser of the Year award
The Adviser of the Year award is a yearly award whose main aims are to acknowledge the important role played by advisers in supporting and enhancing the students' experience, and to support the sharing and spreading of examples of good practice.
Students views were collected through an online questionnaire circulated towards the end of the last academic year. After a detailed and thorough analysis of the the survey's results, the "Adviser of the Year" award has been awarded "ex aequo" to Stepana Lazarova and Rachel Male.
New book out by School of Economics and Finance alumnus Junior Ogunyemi
Junior Ogunyemi studied BSc Economics at Queen Mary and started his own successful business while studying. By the time he graduated, he owned a football coaching academy. His book, entitled 'How to be a Student Enterpreneur' comes out on the 17th of November and tells his story.
In 2010 Junior was voted in the top 10 most outstanding black students in the UK, as well as receiving the Black Youth Achievement award for Business and Enterprise, the Unltd Sport Relief Award and the Knowledge East Enterprise Network award.
MSc Trading Tournament
The first ever Queen Mary Masters Trading Tournament was won by Rohan Arora, who managed to increase his £100,000 initial portfolio by 1.27% despite the FTSE falling by over 3% in the period.
Each participant was given a virtual amount of £100,000 to trade with, though this could be significantly increased as there was the option to engage in some trades on Margin. Of the 72 participants only 8 made a gain in their overall portfolio, with a strong correlation of those making less trades being towards the top of the leader board.
Undergraduate student Lukas Odstrcil completes Ironman Triahlon
On 7th August, Lukas Odstrcil, a 3rd-year undergraduate student within the School, completed the Ironman Triathlon race in Regensburg, Germany, in a time of 12 hours and 31 minutes. An ironman race is comprised of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile cycle and a marathon (26.2 mile) run. Speaking after the event, a proud, but no doubt exhausted Lukas commented: "I managed to live through it. People said I was a little crazy, but it has been one of the greatest days of my life so far. Painful as well though!". Many congratulations, Lukas!
