2010 Drapers’ Awards for Excellence in Teaching

The School of Economics and Finance was delighted to hear that seven staff members had been nominated by the Economics Students for the 2010 Drapers’ Awards for Excellence in Teaching. The nominees are:

Professor N Vriend, Dr M Galizzi, Dr G Cespa, Dr A Ferreira, Dr L Leonida, Dr Y Makedonis, Dr R Veneziani and Dr W Koeniger. Good luck all.

Best school for Student support

The School was delighted to receive the award for best student support at the course representative award ceremony that took place on the Monday 8^th March. This prestigious event took place in Drapers Hall in the city. George Kapetanios was delighted to be able to attend and help celebrate the students success and contribution to the School.

Morag Shiach (Vice-Principal (Teaching and Learning) commented, ‘congratulations to you (HOD) and your colleagues for winning the Department of the Year Award for excellent student support at this evening’s Course Reps Ceremony. All the Economics reps I met after the ceremony spoke enthusiastically about the changes they had seen in the Department in the past couple of years, and were unanimous in their view that the Department was working very hard to improve their experience as students. This was wonderful to hear.’

Julien-Pierre Franco, 2^ndyear rep said ‘all the ceremony attendees were very impressed by the venue and the quality of the people were outstanding, we could have a chat the founder of the venue, and get to know different head of departments and be honoured by the union with our respective awards. Overall being a course representative made me even prouder of be part of this university since the facts shows that students are really represented and their issues are taken into account and promptly solved by the union and department which this is why -overwhelming experience- is a synonym of Queen Mary University of London’.

The Economics Department is from now on to be known as the School of Economics and Finance. A celebratory reception was held in the department on the 11th of March.

Inaugural Lecture on Coordination

Inaugural Lecture Nicolaas Vriend: On Coordination. Wed 24th March at 18:30. Many social situations can be characterised as a coordination problem; situations that have multiple possible solutions and require those involved to coordinate on the same solution. We will examine a number of such problems; illustrating their commonness and relevance, and analysing individual behaviour as well as social outcomes.

Nicolaas Vriend studied Economics at the University of Amsterdam from 1980 to 1987, finished his PhD at the European University Institute in Florence (Italy) in 1993, and joined Queen Mary, University of London in 1997. He is Co-Editor of the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organisation, Associate Editor of the Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control, Macroeconomic Dynamics, Computational Economics, and the Journal of Economic Interaction and Coordination.

Details: Professor Goodhart obtained his PhD from Harvard in 1963 and is now Emeritus Professor at the London School of Economics. Before joining LSE, he worked at the Bank of England for seventeen years, becoming Chief Advisor in 1980. In 1997 he was appointed as one of the independent members of the Bank of England’s new Monetary Policy Committee until May 2000.

QM Economics Society Quiz Night

The QM Economics Society is proud to present its second QUIZ NIGHT, after the huge success of its first Quiz Night in the first semester.
The up and coming Quiz Night is no doubt going to be fun and exciting with lots of banter between staff and students.

The Quiz Night will take place on: Monday 8th February from 4 – 6 pm.
The Quiz Night will be held in: Drapers Bar, Room 2.

The quiz will have loads of exciting and topical rounds, with teams of between 6 – 8 people. There is no need to have a team on the day.

The more people that turn out the more fun and exciting the night will be, so it would be brilliant if you could join us at this event.
The night is FREE TO ALL.

10-20% discount on 2010-entry MSc, or £1000 fee reduction

The department is pleased to announce that it will be offering 20% discounts on Masters degrees for undergraduate students who attain a First class degree in the department. Undergraduate students attaining a 2:1 in the department are entitled to 10% discount.

The college is offering £1000 fee reduction on 2010-entry master’s programmes to QM current final year undergraduates who are not holding any other scholarship or bursary award, i.e. this cannot be taken as well as the 20% or 10% discount. Please note that these offers apply to home and EU students only.
